To give you a sneak peak of what is to come, we will be including new works by Adel El Siwi, Zakaria Ramhani and George Bahgory.

Born in 1952 Egyptian painter Adel El Siwi had his first major show at the Cairo Atelier in 1985. Since then he has participated in solo and group exhibitions as far across the globe as South America. He is now based in Cairo and has exhibited a number of times with the gallery, as well as being represented by Artspace at 2010’s Art Dubai.

Known for his treatment of the human figure his latest works have been more narrative and ironic. Pure colors pierce the tonal elements, but are restrained by the somber Egyptian landscape marked by the monochromes of the desert and the grayness of Cairo. El-Siwi chooses to use the trite, simple themes of flower pots, palm trees, camels, etc. For a considerable time, El Siwi strongly believed that the more limited the means the stronger the potential of the expression, thus refusing to use any other medium other than painting on paper or canvas. His work in the 1997’s Venice Biennale’s exhibition Modernity’s and Memories: Recent Works from the Islamic World, a room installation entitled The Face and Beyond, explores the new genre of conceptual art through painting.

Tangiers born Zakaria Ramhani grew up in an artistic household where his early works developed a sense of isolated and expressive human figures that, placed in the foreground of compositions are saturated with colours and symbolic objects but devoid of a clear narrative, compel feelings of idleness and desolation in the spectator. In 2006, Zakaria became the youngest person from his country to receive a bursary from the French government to participate in a creative residency at the Cité Internationale des arts in Paris.

Through this direct contact with Western culture and international contemporary art, Ramhani developed new personal and artistic preoccupations. Upon his return to his Tangiers workshop in 2007, he involved himself with great urgency in a vast project that he calls De droite à gauche. Using Arabic, sometimes juxtaposed with French and English, he superimposes letters, words and phrases to create layers of readable and non-readable matter that is shaped into faces. He thus creates sets of paintings that are presented as polyptychs or diptychs and have quickly captivated people’s interest and generated many new avenues for his international career. Ramhani's pursuit of his resolutely expressive and spirited art has been vindicated, and it now freely extends itself into pictorial representations where the sacred, the poetic, and the political are echoes of the world's realities and absurdities.
George Bahgory was born in Egypt in 1935. In 1955, he studied at the Fine Arts Institute of Egypt and moved to Paris in 1970 where he continued his studies at the Fine Arts Institute of Paris. He went on to receive his PH.D in “Egyptian Drawings in Picasso Artworks” from Sorpon University. George Bahgory is mainly seen as a cartoonist. He focuses on music as well Middle Eastern figures in his art works, which can also be seen as a narrative on daily happenings. Bahgory's interest in cartoons dates back to his art-school days in Cairo following the Egyptian revolution. Fascinated by the power of caricature to highlight reality, Bahgory became the first cartoonist in Egypt to move into sophisticated commentary. He received many prestigious awards in Italy, Spain, France and Yugoslavia. Bahgory has also been credited as novelist with a distinguished journalistic style in drawing and editing. He has published six books, three of which were dedicated to art.
Exhibition opening

A cocktail reception will be held at Artspace, located in The Gate Village, DIFC, from 8:00 pm on the 10th of January 2011. The e-invitation is attached.

Media is welcomed from 7.00pm.

Artspace
Sossy Dikijian
+9714 3230820
sossy@artspace-dubai.com

Notes to Editor

About Artspace Gallery:

Launched in May 2003 at the Fairmont Dubai, Artspace Gallery invited Dubai and the region to acquaint themselves with Contemporary Middle Eastern Art. Having dedicated the past five years to promoting and establishing Contemporary Middle Eastern artists in the region, Artspace Gallery now boasts a portfolio of over 20 artists, and is located in the art district at The Gate Village, DIFC.

For more information and location:
Visit www.artspace-dubai.com or call +9714 3230820

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; They will be debuting amongst the International fairs in December 1st to the 5th 2010. ZOOM welcomes Artspace gallery to represent one of their most promising artist Zakaria Ramhani.

One of the most thrilling moments for International Art takes place every year in Miami. Art Basel Miami Beach alongside with other satellite fairs brings to the city an unseen cultural and artistic buzz. This year it will be up to ZOOM to expose exhibitors, critics, collectors and the general public to the world of Contemporary Art of the Middle East, in the aim of increasing artistic awareness of this diverse geographical region. “ZOOM will present a comprehensive forum as well as a unique opportunity to experience and debate the latest developments of artistic production in the dynamic Middle Eastern Region.”

In the intent to succeed in their debut year ZOOM has invited leading international galleries. Amongst them Artspace has confirmed their participation. Sossy Dikijian, Art Director of Artspace states, “We are extremely proud to be a part of ZOOM Art Fair. In the time where Miami is a pivoting point for art, Zoom creates an opportunity to expose the Middle East to a new market and gives us a chance to promote our gallery and artists.”

With their established expertise, Artspace has decided to promote the work of Zakaria Ramhani. His innovative work involves investigations and uses a variety of writing and language from which a face emerges to create a portrait. Ramhani cleverly turns simple but colourful modern writing and language in the creation of vibrant and mesmerising faces that draw the viewer in. Commenting on his artistic endeavour the artist says “When I returned home to Tangier (Morocco) after spending eight months living in France, I began writing on the canvas rather than painting on it. I no longer painted pictures; I wrote portraits.”

Since its foundation in 2003, Artspace has been dedicated to the promotion of Contemporary Middle Eastern Art and Artists. He focuses on music as well as iconic Middle Eastern figures in his art works such as Umm Kolthoum; “I am not painting Umm Kolthoum, but her voice, for to me her voice represents an important phase in modern Egyptian history. Voices can enchant us before our eyes catch on with passion and love”. His work focuses on both iconic Middle Eastern figures and can also be seen as a narrative on daily happenings.

A cocktail reception will be held at Artspace, located in The Gate Village, DIFC, from 8:00 pm on the 9th of November 2010 The e-invitation is attached.

Media is welcomed from 7.00pm.

If interested in arranging a personal interview, please contact:

Artspace
Sossy Dikijian
+9714 3230820
sossy@artspace-dubai.com

Notes to Editor

About Artspace Gallery:

Launched in May 2003 at the Fairmont Dubai, Artspace Gallery invited Dubai and the region to acquaint themselves with Contemporary Middle Eastern Art. In 1994 he left to Nablus where he achieved his studies in Fine Arts (1999). He then settled in Ramallah until 2006.
In 2006 Zurob got a grant that allowed him to reside at the Cité internationale des Arts in Paris.
Since then, he held different solo shows in Atlanta, Marrakech and Paris. He has also participated in several group exhibitions and artistic events such as: Palestine: La création dans tous ses états held at the Arab World Institute in Paris (2009) and then at the National Museum of Bahrain (2009), Gaza 61 + Seoul 59 at the Young Gallery in Seoul (2009), Paris, Damas: regards croisés which was organized by Europia Productions, held at the Arab World Institute in Paris (2008) and then at the National Museum of Damascus (2009), Made in Palestine at the Station Museum of Contemporary Art, Huston, Texas (2003), the 11th Cairo Biennale (2008), and The Still Life Symposium at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, UK (2008).

In Palestine, Zurob had staged many solo exhibitions and was awarded the Al-Qattan Foundation Young Artist Prize (Ramallah) in 2002.

In 2009 Zurob was granted the Bourse et Prix Renoir, currently, he is living & working in Paris.
Hani Zurob’s works deals with situations and events that the artists has experienced, expressing no boundaries between political and private matter, eventually leading towards displacement.
“What I try to do when I paint is to rewrite my life; I try to place myself as a witness of the situations and the events I experience. That’s why there are no boundaries between political matters and private stories in my work. My life has been up till now a series of displacements. Of course this has so much to do with certain historical and social facts. But when painting displacement becomes a matter of exploring the state of Wait, Absence, Halt and Deferral, I wonder if I can still talk about the particularity of the bodies I paint by relating them to some local conditions or to any specific dates.”

Charbel Samuel Aoun is an architect, sculptor and painter from Fanar, Lebanon. He considers himself a realist expressing the state of humanity as he sees it through his art; evoking reactions from his audience as a truth seeker as opposed to creating merely to please/amuse the viewer. His art is dark, thick with emotion and awe-inspiring. Charbel doesn’t consider “artist” a career choice but rather a calling that cannot be ignored.
In 2007 he exhibited at CCF Beirut “out of space”, a sculpture exhibition where forms extended out of their physical space…
In 2009 he had 2 painting exhibitions “mourasshah intikhabi” and “fattoush Beirut” in which he reflected deep feelings of his society.
In 2010 he exhibited at the Artlounge Beirut “Flows”, a trip through light and energy…

Exhibition opening

A cocktail reception will be held at Artspace, located in The Gate Village, DIFC, from 8:00 pm on the 5th of October 2010 The e-invitation is attached.

Media is welcomed from 7.00pm.

If interested in arranging a personal interview, please contact:

Artspace
Sossy Dikijian
+9714 3230820
sossy@artspace-dubai.com

About Artspace Gallery:

Launched in May 2003 at the Fairmont Dubai, Artspace Gallery invited Dubai and the region to acquaint themselves with Contemporary Middle Eastern Art.

Adel El-Siwi was born in Beheira, Egypt in 1952. El-Siwi focuses his work on interior scape, aiming to give the traditional still life objects pride and powerful presence. El Siwi chooses to use simple themes including: flower pots, palm trees and camels. He strongly believes that the more limited the means the stronger the potential of the expression and refuses to use any other medium of painting other than paper or canvas.

From1970 to 1976, he studied medicine at Cairo University before seriously considering a career as a painter. Like other Egyptian artists of the late 1970s, El Siwi, who had emigrated to Europe and North America, was compelled to return to the motherland, drawn by the power of Egypt's legacy of art aesthetic achievement. In 1980 he moved to Milan only to return to Cairo in 1990 where he currently lives and works.
After twelve years of self-training and traveling Europe and Egypt he had his first major show in 1985 at the Cairo Atelier. Since the 1980s he has had solo exhibitions in Egypt, Germany, Lebanon and Italy. He has participated in group exhibitions as far across the globe as Brazil and Mexico. A 1988's exhibition at the Mashrabia Gallery in Cairo marked El Siwi's transition from the human figure to the interiors cape. This new phase attempted to give the traditional still life object pride and powerful presence. His latest works have been more narrative and ironic. Pure colors pierce the tonal elements, but are restrained by the somber Egyptian landscape marked by the monochromes of the desert and the grayness of Cairo. El-Siwi chooses to use the trite, simple themes of flower pots, palm trees, camels, etc. For considerable time, El Siwi strongly believed that the more limited the means the stronger the potential of the expression. Hence, he refused to use any other medium of painting than painting on paper or canvas. However, in his most recent work in the 1997's Venice Biennale's exhibition Modernity’s & Memories: Recent Works from the Islamic World, a room installation entitled The Face and Beyond, El Siwi explores the new genre of conceptual art through painting.

El Siwi’s recent works that is meant to inspire individuals to reconnect with their communities and examine relationship between the present moment and the past.
The whole work is about the magic relation between our daily life, our present moment, and something behind: something very old and deeply related to the far and remote past. “I tried to touch this relation through the human face for a very long time, yes the face: being old and recent in the same moment, now, perhaps I am haunting the same phantasm through the entire human figure.”

Artspace Gallery is now located in The Gate Village, Building 3, Level 2, Dubai International Financial Centre and is open from Saturday to Thursday, 10:00am to 8:00pm. The works will be up till the 25th of April!

We’re proud to invite Zakaria Ramhani to ArtSpace for a second solo show here in Dubai. As a young artist he shows amazing talent through his unique creations using Arabic calligraphy to create faces. His work represents a growing number of young artists from the Middle East that we are keen to support by inviting them to exhibit at our gallery.

Ramhani cleverly turns simple but colorful modern writing and language in the creation of vibrant and mesmerizing faces that draw the viewer in.

Following a successful show at “Word into ART exhibition”, organized by the British Museum, Ramhani’s exhibition at Art Space will follow the same theme featuring pieces from a series of works titled “De droite à gauche”.

His innovative work involves investigations and uses a variety of writing and language from which a face emerges to create a portrait. The letter and face each become an illusion in turn. Overtime the series has evolved and many techniques, mediums and supports can be seen throughout his collection.

Commenting on his artistic endeavour, Ramhani says, “It is significant that it came after I was an Artist in Residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. When I returned home to Tangier (Morocco) after spending eight months living in France, I began writing on the canvas rather than painting on it. I no longer painted pictures; I wrote portraits with the materials instead.”

“The Arabic language is written from right to left, hence the title of the project. I use the plasticity, symbolism and aesthetic of writing to reveal and explain the notions of identity, culture and art that are generated by language. In concert with Arabic, the French language became a reality, my reality: the confrontation of cultures that is my life,” concluded Ramhani.

Born in Tangiers, Morocco in 1983, Ramhani graduated from the plastic arts section of the Centre Pedagogique Regional de Tanger in 2004 and from the Cervantes Centre for engraving in 2007.

Ramhani then went on to teach art at the “Oued amlil” in Taza from 2004 to 2006, and at the children’s painting studio at the Foundation Tanger el Medina in 2004. The artist has been involved with conferences on contemporary Moroccan art and was resident artist at the Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris in 2006.

Ramhani has participated in a number of group exhibitions, most recently Juillet 2006 at the Galerie Europia, Paris, which was concerned with the war in Lebanon in the summer 2006 and a solo exhibition, Corps possedes/Solitude collective, at the Galerie CROUS des Beaux-Arts, Paris.
